State Sen. David Shafer (R-Duluth) was appointed
by Gov. Sonny Perdue as one of his assistant floor leaders in the
Senate.
Shafer, a two-term senator, will push the
governor's legislative agenda through the Senate.
"Faced with tough budget restraints, Georgia
needs elected representatives of vision and determination leading
them in the Legislature," Perdue said in a prepared statement. "I
have been impressed with Sen. Shafer's strategic sense. He is a
strong leader and effective legislator, and I am confident that he
will help my administration advance an agenda for all Georgians."
Shafer vowed to work hard to ensure Perdue
scores some wins under the Gold Dome.
"Governor Perdue has faced extraordinary
challenges in his first seven months on the job, and I look
forward to helping him meet the challenges ahead," Shafer said. "I
share his vision for a new Georgia, and I am absolutely committed
to his success as governor."
Shafer will join Sen. Dan Lee (R-LaGrange),
administration floor leader, and Sen. Preston Smith (R-Rome),
assistant administration floor leader, as the governor's team in
the Senate.
The position means Shafer will move from his
office in the Legislative Office Building to the floor leaders'
office within the state Capitol.
His new address is 109 State Capitol, Atlanta,
GA 30334 and his phone number will be 404-651-7738.
Shafer also will serve as one of the governor's
appointees to the Fiscal Affairs Subcommittee of the Georgia
General Assembly.
The committee controls transfers between line
items of the state budget when the General Assembly is not in
session.
