Gwinnett County's new Senator, David Shafer, is officially
unopposed, but with the close of the Legislative Session, he has
reportedly geared up his fundraising machinery. Shafer raised over
$140,000 in his six week special election campaign for the State
Senate and plans to raise $250,000 for his reelection effort. If
unopposed, he will likely use his campaign war chest to help other
Republican candidates.
Shafer fared well under the new redistricting
plan. His new Senate District 48 includes his strongest precincts
from the February special election for the old Senate District 48,
plus Peachtree Corners where he formerly lived and has substantial
support. Shafer has emerged as a leader in the Gwinnett
Legislative Delegation, helping to mediate recent disputes between
Senate Delegation Chairman Senator Don Balfour and the House
Delegation Chairman, Representative Charles Bannister.
