David Shafer -- Gwinnett's new
State Senator was an obvious and big winner. His decisive victory
in the special election firmly established him as a force in
Gwinnett County politics and will go a long way toward deterring
any serious challenge to his expected bid for a full term this
November. Shafer won the special election without a run-off,
winning over 56% of the vote in the four-man field. District 48's
voters rejected a barrage of nasty last-minute attacks by ex-State
Representative Bobby Reese.
What may prove to be the most
interesting aspect of the race is that Shafer was able to amass a
record campaign war chest (rumored to have exceeded over $120,000,
raised in less than 60 days) without relying on the real estate
development interests which have historically dominated Gwinnett
County political fundraising. Shafer received virtually no
financial support from Gwinnett's development community, primarily
in reaction to the strong and early support that Shafer received
from Gwinnett's "smarter growth" citizen activist groups.
