Shafer
trounces Johnson in GOP straw polls
Wins 15 of 15 contests, takes 83% of the vote
(3/16/09) Sen. David Shafer, R-Duluth, bested Sen. Eric Johnson, R-Savannah, in
straw polls over the weekend at GOP conventions in a handful of mostly metro
counties, winning 15 of the 15 contests with 83 percent of the overall vote.
In straw polls conducted in the governor's race, Casey Cagle edged out rivals
John Oxendine and Karen Handel.
In the lieutenant governor's balloting, Shafer won straw polls taken at county
GOP conventions in Barrow, Carroll, Catoosa, Cherokee, Dade, Fayette, Franklin,
Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Lowndes, Newton, Rockdale and Walker counties,
with margins ranging from 65% in Barrow to 100% in Lowndes.
County conventions, held every two years, are typically attended by Republican
activists who provide the volunteer muscle for statewide campaigns. Shafer
served as executive director of the Georgia Republican Party in the early 1990s
before his election to the Senate.
Shafer said he would formally launch his campaign for lieutenant governor after
the 2009 legislative session.
