GEORGIA INSIDER ADVANTAGE
(5/25/06) Sen. David Shafer, R-Duluth,
has been named the new chairman of the Senate Regulated Industries
and Public Utilities Committee.
The appointment was part of a reshuffling of committee chairmanships
following the resignation of Sen. Casey Cagle, R-Gainesville, as
chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. Cagle is running for
Lieutenant Governor.
Shafer's new committee has a broad portfolio, with jurisdiction over
legislation dealing with electric power, natural gas,
telecommunications, as well as regulated professions like
accounting, engineering, architecture, surveying, real estate
brokerage and appraisal, general contracting and homebuilding. The
committee also handles legislation dealing with alcohol distribution
and sales.
Senate President Pro Tem Eric Johnson, R-Savannah, said, "Sen.
Shafer's experience dealing with tough, complex issues is needed as
we face Georgia's future energy demands. We also need his leadership
as we try to find the right balance between the free market and
government regulation."
Shafer led Republican legislative efforts during the 2006 session to
encourage nonembryonic stem cell research. He also sponsored
legislation protecting the privacy of telephone records. In the 2005
session, as administration floor for Governor Sonny Perdue, Shafer
carried two major telecommunications bills for the Governor.
"Sen. Shafer is a great asset to the Senate, Senate Majority Leader
Tommie Williams said. His knowledge of the issues and policy is
incomparable."
Shafer most recently served as chairman of the Senate Science and
Technology Committee. He says that he plans to remain a member of
the committee. His successor as chairman has not yet been named.
In the Senate, committee appointments are made by the Committee on
Assignments which includes the Lieutenant Governor, Senate President
Pro Tempore Eric Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Tommie Williams.
Shafer was first elected to the State Senate in 2002. He represents
portions of Fulton and Gwinnett Counties.
